Mastering Police Academy Crisis Intervention Training

Apr 08, 2025

Not every call is criminal—some are deeply human. Whether it’s a mental health episode, substance use crisis, or a person on the brink, crisis intervention training (CIT) prepares recruits to de-escalate, empathize, and connect. It’s about helping people through their worst moments with skill and compassion. Here’s how to stand out in CIT.

1. Recognize the Signs of a Mental Health Crisis

Crisis doesn’t always look dramatic. It can be silent, confused, or agitated. Recruits are trained to read behavior, not just words.

Tip: Look for rapid speech, blank stares, confusion, or withdrawn behavior—they often speak louder than a 911 call.

2. Use a Calm, Non-Threatening Presence

People in crisis mirror the energy around them. Staying calm and non-confrontational creates space for cooperation.

Tip: Keep your hands visible, voice low and slow, and body language open. Don’t crowd the person—respect space.

3. Build Rapport Before Taking Action

Before you “fix” the situation, connect with the person. Even small gestures can open doors.

Tip: Use their name, ask simple questions, and show empathy. “I’m here to help you, not hurt you.” That alone can change everything.

4. De-Escalate, Don’t Dominate

The goal is to calm the storm, not win the fight. Recruits are taught time, talk, and tactics to avoid force whenever possible.

Tip: If safe, slow everything down. Avoid rapid commands. The more time you give someone to regulate, the better your chances.

5. Know When to Bring in Backup

You’re not alone. CIT often involves coordination with mental health teams, EMTs, or social workers.

Tip: Know your local resources and contacts. A phone call to a crisis counselor might do more than an arrest ever could.

Final Thoughts

Excelling in crisis intervention training means using heart and head in equal measure. Officers who lead with empathy build bridges, not barriers—and in the process, save more than just lives.
