Before hitting the streets, the first step is making sure your patrol car is ready to roll—and that starts with a thorough safety check. In the police academy, recruits learn that the vehicle isn’t just transportation—it’s your mobile office, equipment locker, and sometimes your lifeline. Overlooking one detail can compromise your safety and your shift.
1. Check Tires and Fluids First
You can’t serve the public if you’re stranded on the side of the road. Tire pressure, tread, oil, and coolant must all be in order before you even buckle in.
Tip: Do a tire kick and fluid check at the start of every shift—especially before pursuits or long patrols.
2. Test Lights and Sirens
Visibility and warning systems aren’t optional. Your emergency lights, turn signals, headlights, and sirens must work—every time.
Tip: Before leaving the lot, do a full light check with a partner. A dead bulb can delay your response time or cause an accident.
3. Inspect Weapons and Safety Equipment
Every academy vehicle should be outfitted with essentials like a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, spare gloves, and—if authorized—secured weapons.
Tip: Ensure all gear is present, accessible, and secured. Nothing should roll around or be missing when you need it.
4. Set Up Your Space for Speed and Safety
Adjust mirrors, seat height, and radio volume before you leave the station. You need to react, not fumble, during an emergency.
Tip: Think of your patrol car as an extension of your body. Everything should be within arm’s reach and not obstruct your view or movement.
5. Log It All
Accountability matters. If something’s missing or broken, log it. If a vehicle hasn’t been checked, don’t assume it’s good to go.
Tip: Use your department’s vehicle checklist system—or ask for one in the academy. Document everything you inspect or report.
Final Thoughts
Excelling in patrol vehicle safety checks means thinking ahead and taking nothing for granted. The best officers know that being proactive in the parking lot can save lives on the road.
